There is a Vedic story of a great sinful king his sins I won't mention here but he was saved from hell when some Gopichandana just fell on him from a devotee applying it to his body so its stated if someone just sees someone decorated with this tilak he is freed from all sinful reactions. I just mentioned a few glories here that are mentioned in Vedic literatures. But its stated also we are protected from the yamadutas just by applying this tilak and really everyone should apply it, it helps us to easily remember Krishna.
