How Blowing Conch Shells are Measured, and Why
Below is an image that shows how the conch shells are measured. The important thing about a conch shell and what determines the price is the amount of space the conch shell has inside it for the air to blow around it. They call it the "blowingarch". So you could have two conch shells that are both 6" long and one could be very skinny and one could be very fat. The fat one would have a lot more space inside it for the air to blow around it so it would be more expensive than the skinny one that has less space for the air inside it.
You can see in the photo how it is measured around the blowing arch to account for this. Since conches are created by the natural world, and they are found in the ocean, every one is a bit different.

However, the item itself is of very high quality. I strongly recommend this product to whoever's interested. In general, The larger conches are easier to blow than the smaller ones and hence preferable. The packing of the entire consignment was very good. There was no scope of any of the items getting damaged. It did take some time to unwrap. But I'm glad they were packed so well to prevent any damage on the international shipment! I would recommend this item as well as the store to anyone interested.Read less

GREAT to receive very nice looking shankha. I was delighted that I was able to blow it as well (after a practice for almost 2 weeks or so - but it is not difficult). Its trumpeting vibrations are so auspicious. I feel ..... quite and at peace every time I blow the conch. Now it is part of my daily pooja ritual. Thank You Very Much to Krishna Store Organizers for their beautiful seva and making authentic shankhas (conch) available. I just want to add that, after hearing about shankha-mahatmya (Glory of Conch), I looked for a real big shankha in Delhi including the Pooja Market near Red Fort, but in vain. Learnt from Shopkeepers that Government of India has banned the sale of sea-items in general, except at places of pilgrimages - such as Varanasi, Haridwar etc. When I searched on net, stumbled upon Krishna Store and bought immediately. Many Thanks & Regards Sunil (September 2014)Read less
